Psalms 25:4 - 5 (HCSB) 4    Make Your ways known to me, LORD;
    teach me Your paths.
5    Guide me in Your truth and teach me,
    for You are the God of my salvation;
    I wait for You all day long.

I’ve always had a pretty keen sense of direction.  In most situations, I can find my way around without any trouble.  I remember navigating through a fun-house maze one time as if I had it memorized.  But there have been other times where I have gotten disoriented.  Once on a trip with some of my friends, we were headed from South Padre Island back to our Air Force Base near Austin Texas.  It was late, the sun had set.  I was taking some minor highways heading (what I thought was north).  We came upon a drive-in theater that was playing Young Frankenstein.  I had seen it so I recognized it immediately – “No! it’s pronounced fronk-en-STEEN!”.  We went past and were forced to make a turn, then another and another, and 45 minutes later, we found ourselves right back at the same drive-in theater.

We had to look again at the map with a little more scrutiny to ascertain our location and reassess our path.  We eventually made it back home, but not before wasting a lot of time driving in circles.

Life is like that too.  Although we may make our way with relative ease most of the time, there will be times when we just become so disoriented that we discover ourselves going in circles.  In times like these, we need the grounding of scripture to help us out. This world is so full of goofy religious ideas that sometimes it is hard to find the daisies in a field of dandelions.  We need to seek God’s help in direction.  We need to look for His truth: because as the psalm says, only God is our salvation.

But, what does he mean by “waiting all day” for God?

It means that we need to get out of the hustle and bustle of life and find a quiet place so that we can hear God’s voice.  When our minds are cluttered with all the visual and auditory stimuli of this world, and when we are trying to figure things out on our own, there is so much static that we have difficulty hearing His voice.  It is important that we take time to be still, quiet, and seek His truth for our lives.

We need to be prepared to wait as long as necessary.  I know this sounds like an impossible demand, but that leads to the next point; that we need to plan time to spend with God, listening for His direction.  This should be part of our day – time to be still, shut out the world, and consider God’s word and what it means for your life – today.
