Psalms 2:1 - 6 (HCSB) 1 Why do
the nations rebel
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers conspire together
against the LORD and His Anointed One:
3 “Let us tear off their chains
and free ourselves from their restraints.”
4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord ridicules them.
5 Then He speaks to them in His anger
and terrifies them in His wrath:
6 “I have consecrated My King
on Zion, My holy mountain.”

Today, it is believed that Iran is building a nuclear warhead for missile
deployment against Israel. Iraq and Syria have long declared their hatred for
Israel openly. The Palestinians swear they will reclaim all of Israel as their
own. And many other nations seem poised as allies to these enemies of
Israel.
Was the psalmist speaking prophetically about our day?
I would say, very much so, but he was also speaking about his own time. This is
one of the ways the Bible demonstrates its timelessness. It is written in such a
way (inspired by the Holy Spirit) that it has application for the persons of the
day it was written as well as for all of us down through the ages since.
In King David’s day, he had successfully repelled many advancing nations who
threatened to take from Israel the Promised Land. Because David’s heart was so
focused on the will of God, he was successful in all his battles. Israel had
extended its borders perhaps more than any other time before or since. Yet the
jealous nations surrounding Israel salivated for her destruction.
Yet even when it appears that a nation has the upper hand against Israel, the
God of heaven laughs that anyone would have the audacity to press against His
chosen. And in verse 6, he says: “I have consecrated My King on Zion, My holy
mountain.”
Mount Zion is temple mount. The City of David, David’s palace was just south
of temple mount. So for that day, one would see verse 6 referring to King David
or perhaps Solomon. Yet, today, we can look at that same verse and see that it
is Jesus who has been set up as King, even though the nations are blind to it.
Jesus has been established as the King of this world and his throne will be on
mount Zion one day.
How foolish are those who refuse to see? How futile are their efforts?
Pray for the peace of Israel.
