Isaiah 66:1-2(NRSV)

1    Thus says the LORD:
    Heaven is my throne
    and the earth is my footstool;
    what is the house that you would build for me,
    and what is my resting place?

2
    All these things my hand has made,
    and so all these things are mine,

    But this is the one to whom I will look,
    to the humble and contrite in spirit,
    who trembles at my word.

In these verses, God declares His sovereignty.  When the question is asked, “what is the house that you would build for me?” and “what is my resting place?”, He is asking who can build a place grand enough to contain Him, and who could prepare His grave.  Since He is above all these things, it is senseless for us to presume that He would dwell only in this place or that place.  It is equally senseless to consider His demise.

But more importantly is the idea of worship.  Does God only stay in the church building?  Of course not.  In the same way, our worship should not be confined to the church building.  Worship is a state of the heart, as defined by the later part of the second verse.  He seeks the humble and contrite spirit, and those who revere His word.  We know that God delights in our corporate worship, therefore, we are obligated to gather in worship, but our individual worship extends beyond this gathering.

It is easy to read but sometimes difficult to put ideas into practice.  Do you revere God’s word?  Are His words so sacred to you that you tremble at the thought of being an audience to Him?
