Isaiah 55:10-11(NRSV)

10    For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
    and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
    making it bring forth and sprout,
    giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

11
    so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
    but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

The Lion King, a recent Disney movie celebrated the “cycle of life”.  In the movie, the food chain and how it regenerates was demonstrated.  And elementary school students will learn about the “water cycle” in which rain falls and waters the ground.  It becomes part of the plants that grow.  Then people and animals who feed on the plants consume that water and it is expelled as waste to the ground again.  There it is filtered through the earth and gathered to streams where if flows to lakes and oceans.  It then evaporates and gathers into clouds where it again rains to the earth.

In this passage, God also declares that His word behaves the same.  Specifically, His word has a specific purpose, just as the rain has the purpose of watering the ground.  But God’s word will do exactly what it was spoken to do.  Rain may fall on rocks, streets or houses and be channeled off directly to lakes or oceans and fail to water the ground as intended.  This will never happen with God’s words.

Let me encourage you to read the Bible.  God’s word is full of truth and meaning for you.  And as you encounter it, it will accomplish in you what God has intended.
