Ecclesiastes 10:20 (NIV)
Do not revile the
king even in your thoughts,
Or curse
the rich in your bedroom,
Because a bird of the air may carry your words,
And
a bird on the wing may report what you say.
Throughout my life I have heard people say “a little birdy told me…” when asked how they came about certain knowledge. I suspect these verses are the inspiration for that saying.
We know, of course, that birds will not fly away to report what we say in our privacy, but the saying has merit. We will say what our heart dwells upon. And ultimately, our actions will reflect our attitudes regardless of our intention to disguise them. Despite our best actions, our attitudes will be found out.
Learn to love your enemies – as we are commanded to do. Learn to pray for, and respect, those set in authority over you. The Bible tells us that God has placed those in authority and they will answer to Him. And finally, learn to be content in your economic situation. If we learn anything from Solomon, it is that riches are meaningless in God’s timetable. What is important is the quality of your relationships. Don’t let your relationships be spoiled by bitterness or envy.
