Psalm: 141:3-4a (NIV)

Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord;
        Keep watch over the door of my lips.
Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil,
        To take part in wicked deeds.

Most of us have heard the maxim “The pen is mightier than the sword.”  When we hear this, we automatically think of the written word, but let me also suggest that this same principal applies to the spoken word.  You know that a careless word can hurt those closest to you.  Politicians know that any word that is spoken without great thought can ruin their career.

Our words are very powerful.  They can encourage or destroy.

Will you guard your words?  Will you be careful to let nothing pass from your lips that could harm?

The second part of the passage above is also important, because from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.  If your heart is full of hatefulness, your words will reflect that.  If your heart is full of love, your words will reflect that as well.

Do your best to remove wickedness from your heart and pray for God’s strength to do so.  Speak every word as if those words were to be engraved on your tombstone.
