Psalm 31: 7 – 8 (NIV)

I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
                For you saw my affliction
And knew the anguish of my soul
You have not handed me over to the enemy
But have set my feet in a spacious place.

Have you ever gone hiking, or found yourself on a slope of some kind.  You have to watch your steps carefully not to step on loose ground.  You search for a solid, and hopefully level place to set your foot.

This is the image here.  Sometimes our lives can feel like we are standing on the edge of a cliff with no solid place to stand.  Pebbles around our feet slip and fall.  One careless move and our life could just tumble down.  Illness and misfortune can drag us to a state of despair.  Problems in work or relationships all contribute to the stress we deal with.

But this psalm tells us that God is aware of our condition.  If we seek Him, and His righteousness, He will deliver us.  He wants to help, just as a parent wants to pick up their child when they fall.  But, God has not promised to deliver everyone.  Some will reject Him and He will not force His will upon those who reject Him.

Seek God, and He will lift you from that place that seems so treacherous and set you on a flat and spacious ground so that your troubles will seem far less significant.
