Psalm 23: 1 – 3 (NIV)
The
Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He
makes me to lie down in green pastures
He
leads me beside quiet waters
He
restores my soul.
I know this is a familiar passage, and many can recite it. But let’s think about one part of it for just a few minutes.
What is quiet water? The implication here is fresh, clean water that is safe and easily accessible.
A shepherd would not lead his sheep to a raging rapid river, nor would he lead them to water that was contaminated or stagnant. But a gentle brook would be a perfect place to provide refreshment in safety.
We are abundantly blessed in this country to have fresh, safe water at our disposal. It is so abundant, that we rarely think about it or what it takes to make it safe to drink.
How many times do you rinse your hands? When you cook, work in the yard, etc. How many times have you drawn a drink of water from a faucet or water fountain? Did you ever stop to think that the blessing of fresh water is something we should be thankful for?
Today, every time you get a drink of water, or wash your hands, stop to thank God for his many blessings on you personally and on us as a nation. Then, ask Him what you can do to relieve the suffering of those who DON’T have the blessing of fresh clean water.
