3First, be aware of this: scoffers will come in the last days to scoff, following their own lusts, 4saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers [have all died], all things continue as they have been since the beginning of creation.” 5They willfully ignore this: long ago the heavens and the earth existed out of water and through water by the word of God. 6Through these the world of that time perished when it was flooded by water. 7But by the same word the present heavens and earth are held in store for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
14Therefore, dear friends, while you wait for these things, make every effort to be found in peace without spot or blemish before Him. 15Also, regard the patience of our Lord as [an opportunity for] salvation, …
There is a historical period known to scientists as the “Little Ice Age.” In this period, the earth inexplicably cooled. In fact, some say there were three different cooling trends beginning in the 13th century and ending in the mid 19th century; each separated by a brief warming trend. During these periods, glaciers grew in size and pack ice advanced southward. It would seem there is an ebb and flow of our climate.
Let me be clear on this point. We humans have an utmost obligation to conserve resources and reduce waste and pollutants. As stewards of this world, it is imperative.
On the issue of global-warming; I am a skeptic. That is, I believe the world is not nearly as static as some would propose. This world is (as it were) an organic being that has cycles of warm, cycles of cool, cycles of wet, cycles of dry, and so forth. We live on this organism as a sort of parasite. We benefit from the pleasant cycles and suffer in the inclement cycles. So is the current warming a result of our negligence, or a natural fluctuation of this planetary organism? Whichever it is, do not forget this fact; the world existed because of God. He created it, and He sustains it.
My issue with “global warming” as proposed by the Humanists is the underlying philosophy that humans can save humanity, that within ourselves lies salvation. This is a deeply New Age rooted philosophy that becomes manifest in the speeches and propositions of liberal politicians. On an individual level, New Age-ism states that we can save ourselves by introspection and self spiritual-development—we have no need of an all-knowing God. On a global scale, New Age-ism believes that humans can solve all of humanities’ problems if we all “evolve” to a higher spiritual consciousness to do the right things—we have no need of an all-powerful God.
Again, I am not opposing environmental responsibility. I am, however, strongly opposed to the idea that humans can save humanity. On a global scale, the depravity of man is self-evident. On an individual scale, this may not seem so evident, but God knows the heart and has declared “There is none righteous, not even one!” We need a Savior.
God created this world. This world and all in it are subject to His timetable. The earth will be destroyed at a future time, but only according to His timing. We cannot advance that time, nor can we delay it. That day of destruction is being delayed to give us opportunities for salvation through Him. Scoffers will say, “things go on as they always have,” and “where is this savior you are waiting for?” And then they will propose a plan by which humans will be their own saviors.
Nevertheless, do not lose heart; God will act on His own timing. While we wait, we should be responsible stewards with this earth and its resources – yet resist the humanist agenda.
