Romans 5:6 - 11 (HCSB)
6For while we were still helpless, at the appointed moment, Christ died for the ungodly. 7For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. 8But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us! 9Much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by His blood, we will be saved through Him from wrath. 10For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, [then how] much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life! 11And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Paul is writing to the Roman Jews explaining the mystery of God’s grace. God does not love us because we are good or righteous. Paul also points out that Jews were not considered justified by the Law. But rather, Paul explains that God loved us even while we were in our sin – even while we were detestable to Him. Because God cannot co-exist with sin, He cannot bear our presence. Yet He desires our companionship and worship.
Therefore, since the penalty of sin was death (see Genesis 2:17) and from that first sin, God has provided a substitute to die in man’s place. But each of these was only a temporary. So God Himself provided a perfect sacrifice through Jesus.
So if the death of Jesus paid our sin debt, what do we gain through Jesus’ resurrection?
His resurrection gives us a hope that we will again live with Him.
How wonderful it is that not only can we stand before God at the Judgment justified through faith in Jesus’ death, but with the hope of new life in His Resurrection.
